Additional Information
The early years of Albert Warren Sutphen were spent between the schools of Earlville, Illinois, and his father's farm. At the age of seventeen, while still in school, he passed the required examination and received from the county superintendent, his first certificate to teach, a document which he treasured. After teaching several winters, and helping his father in the spring and summer, he secured the principalship of one of the grammer schools at Ottowa, Illinois, having finished the course of the high school of his native town. After teaching for several years, he took a course in the National Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio, and soon after removed to California, where he followed teaching for many years, and was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Solano County. His work in that capacity was very highly spoken of. He was very zealous in his educational work and brought the schools of hs county to a high state of efficiency. The family was all musical, and Albert W. Sutphen, Jr., composed several fine pieces.

On May 20th, 2000, Charles Brummel wrote and had this to add:

"I last have Albert in San Bernadino, CA, in 1905 when he signed an affadavit for his sister-in-law, Mary Mead Sutphen, when she applied for a Civil War pension."
